Kids love to talk about the things they are interested in and enjoy doing and this knowledge is often the piece of the puzzle that helps them learn. By knowing their interests, you can often present learning experiences in a way that relates to them and their lives giving them more of a connection to the learning experience. I also work really hard at building positive relationships with my students but I have realized these things often take time. In getting to know my students I really have to get to know their parents. Some are easier to get to know because I see them on a daily basis. Others ride the bus so I don't see their parents daily. The bus riders, I try to get to know parents by notes, emails, and phone conversations. When the kiddos come in each morning I greet them with "Good morning _" I try to give them some type of compliment after that. I have taken learning styles inventories and played a game with it, where we all grouped up and saw who was like us and who was different. It was fun and led to some good discussion in the class.
\n
\nWe also talked a long time about what we want to be when we grow up, and figuring out how much education you would need to to that job, about what the job would pay, and what kind of home, car, and toys you could afford to buy at that salary. Then we wrote our promises to ourselves about our educations this year and posted them in the hallway. Come see!
\n
\nI'm having individual conferences with my students, mainly about their favorite subjects in school and their reading habits. I am quickly learning which students have a bag full of effective reading strategies and which ones get to the first hard word and don't know what to do. Very helpful to start making small groups.

Right now, I am only in the cafeteria during Pre-K and 2nd grade lunch! My goal for this year is to know as many names and faces as I can!
\n
\nSad to say, I am doing good to know all of the teachers' names right now, but I am working on students a few at a time. I certainly miss that "bonding" time I used to have with kids in the classroom. I am hoping to get an invite from teachers to have me come in and do a mini-lesson just so I can interact with kids. I know if I put it in my schedule, I will commit to coming to a class and not get side-tracked with the many other tasks of a CIS.
\n
\nI commend you on the individual conferences you are having with your students! That is an awesome best-practice that should be shared with other teachers. What an awesome pre-assessment for you! One question I used to ask my students was whether or not they ate dinner with their entire family on a regular (nightly) basis. This gave me great insight into the family dynamics and how much interaction and oral language occurred in the home. It was a great "predictor" of what kind of background knowledge they have and what kind of a reader they were before I even gave a benchmark test!","dateCreated":"1221250873","smartDate":"Sep 12, 2008","userCreated":{"username":"wrightp20","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/wrightp20","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/pic\/1221326656\/wrightp20-lg.jpg"}},{"id":"5629796","body":"Another thing I like to do every year is play 20 questions. There are about 20 of them, so I get to ask each student one question that they have to answer. They, in turn, each get to ask me one question, so that I have to answer 20 questions! I tell them there are no limits on the questions they can ask, and that I will even have to tell the truth about how old I am and how fat I am if they ask. It is a lot of fun, and usually by the end of that activity I have a real sense of rapport with them, because I use the opportunity to tell a lot about myself that they otherwise would never know. It's things THEY want to know, not things I want to tell them about. As far as getting to know them, all I have to ask is "What is the best cartoon?" or "What is the best video game?" and then sit back and listen to the discussions and observe how they interact with one another.","dateCreated":"1222124361","smartDate":"Sep 22, 2008","userCreated":{"username":"bfonville","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/bfonville","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/pic\/1202793136\/bfonville-lg.jpg"}},{"id":"5634300","body":"What wonderful strategies! The first few days of school we send home a student inventory for the parents to fill out. I find out very interesting information about the student from the parents point of view. After a few days go by we have the students fill out a student survey about themselves and what they like and don't like about school. It's very interesting seeing if their opinion of themselves matches that of their parents.
